Does rehabilitation work?
Dear rehabilitation colleagues, when operating
Do you often hear patients/family members complaining
"Is there any use in rehab?"
"Spending money every day has not seen any improvement?"
Kangkang has created more than 100 articles
but rarely touches on this core issue
"Is recovery useful?"
I can't explain this question in a word or two.
Let me speak slowly...

First, let's explore a few little stories together:
PART 01
For stroke patients, their family members spend huge sums of money every day to seek treatment in the hospital, but there is no obvious improvement. At this time, they will have doubts: Why can't this hand be raised all the time? Is this recovery effective?
PART 02
The young athlete was hospitalized with an injury and returned to the game not long after, and he and his brother, who had just undergone surgery, said confidently: "I was in the hospital immediately after my ACL reconstruction and now I'm playing No problem at all. PART 03
A father whose daughter is in a wheelchair with a spinal injury asks his therapist with concern: I don't expect her to be able to dance again, but at least... at least get her back on her feet, right? PART 04
An old man who once suffered from lumbar disc herniation advertised to his neighbors: I used to have back pain a lot, and I went for several rehabilitation treatments, and the effect was really good! Now there is no pain at all!
Popular science time
What is recovery?
Rehabilitation refers to the comprehensive and coordinated application of medical, educational, social, and occupational measures to restore the lost functions of the sick, injured, and disabled as quickly as possible and to the greatest extent possible. Return to work and return to society.
Rehabilitation and Recovery are synonymous in Chinese.
But it should be noted that in medicine, "rehabilitation" and "recovery" are different concepts, don't confuse them!
Recovery generally refers to the decline in the health level after illness, and the health returns to the pre-illness level after treatment and rest, that is, 100% recovery.
Rehabilitation refers to the situation where the health level declines after an injury, and although it has been actively treated, it has become a disability, and the health level cannot return to the original level, that is, the recovery cannot reach 100%. This is a difference worth noting.
Focus! Recovery is not 100% recovery! Useful, but not everything!
What are the specific techniques of rehabilitation therapy?
Physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), psychotherapy, traditional Chinese rehabilitation therapy, rehabilitation engineering, rehabilitation nursing, social services, etc.
What does modern rehabilitation involve?
Modern rehabilitation involves a wide range of areas, from the elderly to children, from nerves to cardiopulmonary, all of which are the business of modern rehabilitation medicine. Specifically, it includes neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, burn rehabilitation, geriatric rehabilitation, children's rehabilitation, tumor rehabilitation, postpartum rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, etc.
As mentioned before, "rehabilitation may not be able to fully recover to 100%", however, there are still some patients who are misled by false advertisements and insist that rehabilitation is only effective if it reaches 100%.
Obviously, there are certain misunderstandings about rehabilitation, and there are many similar misunderstandings. For example, some people mistakenly believe that "rehabilitation is equivalent to massage". This misunderstanding makes Kangkang feel very disturbed...
Through the long-term practice and continuous improvement of generations of rehabilitation therapists, rehabilitation therapy technology has gradually evolved into a complete system, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychotherapy, and technology that integrates traditional Chinese rehabilitation methods wait. However, do you really only see these techniques as "Tui Na massage"? !
As the "most" favorite media account of rehabilitation therapists (self-proclaimed), Kangkang is willing to say a word: Although we really know how to "massage"...but we really know more than how to "massage"!
In response to common misunderstandings about rehabilitation, Kangkang provided accurate answers one by one to make it easier for everyone to understand the questions: "Is rehabilitation useful" "How useful is rehabilitation"👇
Solution time
Misunderstanding 1: Rehabilitation treatment is massage?
Answer: Modern rehabilitation includes many therapeutic techniques, including but not limited to massage!
The technical field of rehabilitation therapy covers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and traditional Chinese rehabilitation methods. Among them, massage is a part of traditional Chinese rehabilitation techniques. Therefore, the scope of rehabilitation therapy is broader than just massage.
Misunderstanding 2: Going to rehabilitation means that the disease will definitely be cured?
Answer: Prognosis varies widely from disease to disease. Even with the same disease, different people have different prognosis.
For each disease, the degree of recovery after rehabilitation requires an authoritative explanation from the competent physician. The doctor in charge will make an objective judgment and interpretation considering the progress of existing medical technology, the prognosis pattern of similar diseases, and the specific situation of the patient. Patients and their families should accept these explanations with a rational attitude and actively cooperate with the rehabilitation team's treatment plan.
Misunderstanding 3: Rehabilitation treatment does not have much effect on my disease?
Answer: Rehabilitation treatment should be a process with a beginning and an end.
The prognosis of each disease has its own unique stage characteristics. When it is better to start and when it should end in stages, there are scientific basis. 1. Missing the best recovery period will naturally have a certain negative impact on the prognosis. 2. When the prognosis stage of certain diseases enters the "plateau stage" or the recovery speed of the disease begins to slow down, it indicates that patients may need more time and a more positive attitude for rehabilitation treatment.
Misunderstanding 4: If you want to recover, help me quickly, don't ask me so many irrelevant things?
Answer: Rehabilitation treatment is a science, which pays attention to scientific basis. "No assessment, no recovery."
Without objective assessment before and after rehabilitation, treatment may become blinded, lose its goal orientation, and make comparisons of treatment effects impossible. The assessment conducted by the therapist is by no means meaningless. On the contrary, the content of these assessments, whether it is questions, measurements, or information that the patient is required to fill in, has an important impact on future rehabilitation treatment.
Misunderstanding 5: Rehabilitation means asking my old man to wipe the table and take a bath all day long?
Answer: Modern rehabilitation concepts encourage patients to take the initiative to participate. Activities such as "cleaning the table and making rings" are therapeutic activities of occupational therapy.
Seemingly simple actions such as "cleaning the table" and "ringing circles" actually contain multiple scientific actions, which happen to be what patients need to learn or reinforce at a specific stage. And some activities commonly known as "bath" and "swimming" are actually hydrotherapy. By using the characteristics of water buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure, water movement training under the guidance of the therapist is helpful. Improve body function and promote recovery.
